I am concerned that he does not have enough time to consider what his future holds for him. Is he ready to minister in our tradition with out realizing the concerns he has caused his past parishioners? Why would we automatically accept a priest who was ordained Roman Catholic until he has had time to learn our traditions, study the history of the Episcopal Church and come a complete understanding of what he has done with his vows and how will he react to his new vows should he be ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church?
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean that when someone asks me to explain the difference between the Roman Catholic and Episcopal faiths I simply need to say priests can be married in one and not in the other - no more trying to make sense of the deep theological notions like transubstantiation that have keep us divided ideologically for centuries?
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine a priest being so willing to trade theology which by virtue of the vows made at ordination has been declared central to his belief system for another. This sounds like a priesthood of convenience - and for the Episcopal church to accept this priest with what seems like little or no discernment is very troubling.
Now really...is the Episcopal Church so hard up for new clerics that we would immediately accept someone who was so reckless with his vows to the Catholic Church? He sounds like a spoiled brat to me who might have paid someone off to let him do this. I don't know who the Bishop was who did this but let's just pray that he's not coming to RI. And can we talk about transubstantiation next week? Sounds like a topic I should look up !!!

ReplyDeleteThanks for responding to the blog. Your questions are just right. It may very well be appropriate for Fr. Cutié to be received as a priest in the Episcopal Church at some point, but surely there needs to be time to move from a Roman Catholic to an Anglican ethos, and to sort out the perosnal issues that are so obviously at play here.

ReplyDeleteWe can take up transubstantiation at formation next week, but only after we figure out the Trinity.
